Marvel Television's "Wonder Man" will return for a second season on Disney+, the streaming service announced Monday. The renewal comes roughly two months after the series premiered with eight episodes on January 27, marking one of the few live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe series to secure a second season order.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley will reprise their roles as aspiring actor Simon Williams and veteran performer Trevor Slattery, respectively. The series was created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, with Guest returning as showrunner and executive producer while Cretton continues as director and executive producer.
The first season follows Williams, a struggling Hollywood actor who meets Slattery during a chance encounter. Together, they pursue life-changing roles in a remake of the superhero film "Wonder Man" directed by the legendary Von Kovak, played by Zlatko Burić. The show offers viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the entertainment industry through the lens of two actors at opposite ends of their careers.
The series debuted to strong critical acclaim, earning a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In her review for Variety, critic Alison Herman praised the lead performances, writing that "Abdul-Mateen and Kingsley make their characters equally ridiculous and romantic, urged on by a motivation more intimate and individual than saving the world."
The renewal represents a notable achievement within the Marvel Television landscape on Disney+. Most MCU series on the platform have been designed as limited series, including "WandaVision," "Hawkeye," "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier," and "Moon Knight." Only "Loki," starring Tom Hiddleston, previously ran for two seasons among the original Disney+ Marvel productions.
The first season's supporting cast included X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed, and Olivia Thirlby. Details about which cast members will return for the second season beyond the two leads have not been announced.
"Wonder Man" distinguishes itself within the Marvel television catalog by focusing on the entertainment industry itself rather than traditional superhero narratives. The meta-commentary on Hollywood, combined with the chemistry between Abdul-Mateen II and Kingsley, appears to have resonated with both critics and audiences.
The series joins a limited group of Marvel properties that have earned second seasons in recent years. While the "WandaVision" spinoff "Vision Quest" remains in development, "Wonder Man" represents one of the clearest votes of confidence Disney+ has given to its Marvel television content since the launch of the platform's original programming strategy.
Production details for the second season, including episode count and release timeline, have not yet been announced. The renewal comes as Disney+ continues to refine its approach to Marvel content, balancing limited series with potential ongoing franchises that can sustain multiple seasons.
