Mahershala Ali is heading back to HBO. The two-time Academy Award winner has joined the cast of *Task* season two, reuniting with the premium network seven years after his critically acclaimed turn in *True Detective* season three. Ali will star opposite returning lead Mark Ruffalo in the crime drama from creator Brad Ingelsby.

Ali becomes the first new cast member announced for the sophomore season of Task, HBO's crime procedural that aired its debut season last fall. The show follows FBI agent Tom Brandis, played by Ruffalo, who "takes the helm of a new task force, but the deeper the operation runs, the harder it is to tell who's the target," according to the series logline.

In season two, Ali will portray Eddie Barnes, a well-respected DEA agent based in Philadelphia whose team comes into conflict with Ruffalo's character. The casting represents a significant get for HBO, landing an actor whose recent filmography includes Moonlight, Leave the World Behind, and the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth.

HBO ReunionAli's return to HBO marks his first series work for the network since his memorable performance as Wayne Hays in True Detective season three, which aired in 2019.

The original Task ensemble featured Tom Pelphrey, Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Thuso Mbedu, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Raúl Castillo, Silvia Dionicio, Phoebe Fox, and Martha Plimpton. Given the show's first season finale, not all characters survived, making cast turnover expected for the continuation.

Ruffalo remains the only confirmed returnee from the original cast, though HBO has not ruled out additional familiar faces returning for season two. The network has kept plot details under wraps, though the focus appears to be shifting toward the Philadelphia setting where Ali's DEA agent operates.

Brad Ingelsby, who created the series and previously worked on Mare of Easttown, will return as showrunner and executive producer. He's joined by executive producers Paul Lee and Mark Roybal of Wiip, along with Jeremiah Zagar, Ruffalo, and Ron Schmidt. Nicole Jordan-Webber and Karen Wacker serve as co-executive producers.

Ali's Awards Legacy
  • Won Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Moonlight (2017)
  • Won Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Green Book (2019)
  • Provided voice work for the Spider-Verse animated films
  • Long attached to Marvel's Blade reboot, currently in development

The casting comes as Ali continues to balance high-profile film work with selective television projects. Beyond his Oscar wins for Moonlight and Green Book, he's maintained a presence in streaming content with Apple TV+'s Swan Song and Netflix's Leave the World Behind.

His long-rumored Blade project at Marvel Studios has faced multiple setbacks and script revisions, keeping the actor available for other commitments like Task. The HBO series represents a return to the kind of character-driven crime storytelling that made his True Detective performance so acclaimed.

For HBO, landing Ali strengthens their roster of prestige television talent as the network continues competing with streaming rivals for top-tier actors. Task season one performed solidly for the network, though specific viewership numbers were not disclosed.

Production details for season two, including filming locations and premiere dates, have not been announced. The series joins HBO's slate of crime dramas that includes The White Lotus, Barry, and various limited series exploring law enforcement themes.

Ali is represented by Cognition, CAA, Relevant, and attorney Shelby J. Weiser of Sloane Offer. His involvement in Task season two signals HBO's commitment to the series and suggests confidence in the show's creative direction under Ingelsby's leadership.
